Low budget productions can go a long way with very cheap lamps.

Sodium vapor lights:

-Very little power and costs only 10 dollars to rent;

-The light output, however, is gritty and ugly and difficult to control.

Simple fluorescent light tubes:

-Buy at hardware stores for very little money;

-Philips produces tubes that are very clear colored without green or magenta, in both tungsten and daylight color temperatures.

We used Black spray paint on the fixtures and tubes to make them look older and more gritty.

Multiple directions with one setup:

-No need for major light changes;

-Great for low budget;

-Examples below are same setups but in opposite directions.

Two or more colors of light in same scene.

3 basic colors in this scene:

-Yellow light from sodium vapor lights;

-Blue light in the shadows from a gelled HMI;

-And more pure and white light from a fluorescent tube from below.
